Jag gjorde nyligen en intervju med suveräne Kate Havnevik som är en Norsk/Engelsk sångfågel i klass med Kate Bush, väl värd att kolla in om ni inte hört henne förut. Från Kate Bush till Kate Havnevik,
en Norsk-Engelsk sångfågel charmar världen…
Norden verkar föda en hel del i musikvärlden just nu. Det senaste stjärnskottet, som kanske inte är så nytt, röner just nu stor uppmärksahet i USA. Hon heter Kate Havnevik och har nyligen släppt sin debutplatta ”Melankton”. En skiva som beskrivs som en korsning mellan Trip-hop och Electronica, men för mig så för det mer tankarna till ett område mellan Björk och Kate Bush med mycket stråkar och arrangemang.
Men Kate är på inget sätt ny inom musikbranchen, trots att namnet kanske är nytt för er, så är knappast hennes röst det. Ni har nog hört henne i hennes samarbete med Norska ”Röyksopp” eller kanske Moby? Kate som är uppfödd i Norge men har en Engelsk pappa, bor och arbetar numera i London och jag lyckades att fånga henne innan hennes kommande uppträdande på The Bush Hall i London (den 24 Augusti) och här följer intervjun med Kate.
What response on your first release “Melankton” have you received so far?
Great! I can’t complain at all.
What would you call your style of music if any?
Oh dear, this is always the hardest question I get. Even though Melankton has a particularly poignant style with all these orchestral strings and electronic beats, that’s really just the way I wanted to dress these particular songs. While recording Melankton we used to call it “Classitronica”, something that’s in between classical music and electronica. But I guess the basic songs if stripped can also be seen as traditional song writing. For Melankton I deliberately wanted the strings and voice to be the main body of the sound-scape sprinkled with beats and brass. For my next album I plan to use beats and rhythm as the main focus.
How do you feel that the music scenes are different in London from Norway or Sweden?
The first that comes to mind is really the difference in size and opportunities. There’s probably more difference between Norway and Sweden than between London and Sweden. I think there is a bigger audience for niche music in London, probably just because there are more people and with that comes more diversity. In Norway I think it is more popular mixing in traditional folk sounds in pop. There is also a kind of scandi–style dance/pop music that doesn’t really work in the UK. On the other hand bands like The Cardigans & Royksopp etc… works brilliantly all over the world. But I do think music in all these three countries are very trend led.
